Every child is a shining star, regardless of circumstance. Our birthday program brings this message of joy and positive recognition to homeless and impoverished children whose special day may otherwise go unnoticed.
At shelters and housing programs, this program offers all the traditional birthday fun, plus educational and enrichment activities. Our parties include meals, cupcakes, treat bags and lots of love and attention for the kids! Many of these children have never experienced a birthday party or received new presents, but being in the spotlight and feeling a positive sense of self are oftentimes the gifts that mean the most.
For transient homeless students, our birthday and care packages are delivered anonymously to local schools. Elementary age students receive birthday treats to share with classmates, giving them a chance to feel confident and a sense of normalcy among peers. Middle and high school students receive a birthday bag with supplies and special sweets to take ‘home’ and celebrate with family. All students served also receive new presents, books and academic supplies, healthy snacks, as well as a care & comfort set.
Many of the impoverished children we serve are living in Supportive Housing units, often with siblings and a single parent who has limited income and resources. Financial strain for these parents comes with tough challenges like how to maintain rent while buying groceries and other items the family needs. When even the most basic of necessities are too often scarce, birthdays become nothing more than a distant wish for these kids. Our Family Party Packs provide everything struggling parents need to bake, decorate and serve up big birthday smiles. Decorations, supplies, and a few gifts help complete each party pack to help birthday wishes come true for disadvantaged children.
To date, more than 15,000 local children have been impacted by our Bless-a-Birthday program.
In partnership with A Child's Place and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, transient homeless students are identified for this program. These children do not live in area shelters but rather in motels, campgrounds, cars, and other transient situations.
All student packages include birthday treats and supplies along with new gifts and books, a student lap desk, and a Care & Comfort Bag filled with hygiene essentials, a blanket and a pillow or stuffed animal.
For homeless elementary students, a classroom birthday party helps boost confidence and empowers each child by giving them an opportunity to be givers in a peer environment while celebrating their special days. For homeless middle and high school students, our 'Fit to Celebrate' birthday backpacks lift spirits, promote good health & fitness, and strengthen family bonds during times of hardship.
Our student services program brings recognition and cheer while boosting confidence for homeless youth who are experiencing the most desperate living situations of all.
For most of these children this is the only “real” birthday celebration they will have, and for many it will be a first-time experience.
Elementary School Program Services
This anonymous program boosts self esteem and empowers homeless elementary students by giving them an opportunity to be givers in a peer environment while celebrating their special days. Birthday students receive special snack bags and party supplies to celebrate at school with classmates.
How does it work?
Every month Bright Blessings volunteers assemble and deliver classroom party packages for more than 100 homeless elementary students who will be celebrating their birthdays. This anonymous program helps ensure the privacy of each student's living situation among peers. Our volunteers deliver the party supplies, gifts and care packages to school social workers who then take the party packs to appropriate teachers so that the children can enjoy their celebration in class with friends.
What is provided with each Classroom Party Package?
• 24 party snack bags
• Birthday snack plates and napkins
• Every birthday student served also receives a student lap desk, several small presents, a set of new books, and a Blessing Bundle filled with hygiene supplies, a blanket, and a stuffed animal.
Middle & High School "Fit to Celebrate" Backpacks
In response to the continued rise in obesity among underprivileged youth, Bright Blessings launched a "Fit to Celebrate" program to serve transient homeless middle and high school students. This program provides birthday supplies in backpacks to school social workers so that these teens can celebrate their birthdays at "home" with family members.
Each FTC backpack includes healthy snacks and beverages, party supplies and birthday treats, as well as a fitness fun activity set. Every birthday student served also receives a student lap desk, a few new gifts, a set of books, and a Care & Comfort Bag filled with hygiene supplies, a blanket and a pillow.
